About Us

This is where you will find information on Otago, Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Our job is to manage an Enlarged Rural Fire District (ERFD) across the Otago region. Specifically, this means working to reduce the risk of fire, being better prepared in the event that fire occurs, responding to fires more effectively and enabling the community to recover from the effects of fire with greater ease.

Fire threatens us all and rural fires are particularly devastating – destroying our natural environment, farmland, forests, property and livelihoods. It is in everyone's interests to prevent rural fires. Loss of property from fire is a devastating experience and in many cases, a common sense approach can avoid these disasters.

Otago, Fire and Emergency New Zealand manages rural fire functions within Otago on behalf of the following entities:

Central Otago District Council
Clutha District Council
Dunedin City Council
Queenstown Lakes District Council
Waitaki District Council
The Department of Conservation

To report a rural fire: Dial 111 and ask for the Fire Service.
